Ready to Grow Your VA Business? Start Showing Up in Person

Let’s talk about something that might make you a little uncomfortable: in-person networking. If you’re anything like most Virtual Assistants, the idea of walking into a room full of strangers, shaking hands, and talking about what you do probably feels about as appealing as skydiving without a parachute. Trust me, I get it. Most of us in the VA industry are introverts, and the thought of putting ourselves out there can feel incredibly daunting…. so much so that many new VAs totally avoid it at all costs!

But here’s the thing: if you want to grow your business, you’ve got to pull up your big girl (or boy) pants and just get out there and do it. Local networking is one of the most powerful ways to connect with potential clients and establish yourself in your community. It’s about building relationships, creating opportunities, and showing people that you’re not just a name on a screen - you’re a real person with skills that they need.

We often talk about the ‘Know, Like and Trust’ factor, and it’s built on the simple premise that, above everything, people trust who they know and resonate with. When you show up in person, you’re not just another VA in a sea of online profiles. You’re someone they’ve met, spoken with, and connected to. That’s the kind of trust that makes people want to work with you or - even better - refer you to someone they know (word of mouth referrals are THE BEST referrals you’ll ever get!).

Now, I know this might feel like a big leap, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small. Look for local events like Chamber of Commerce meetings, small business meetups, or niche networking groups. These are often less intimidating than huge conferences, and they give you the chance to have real conversations with people.

The key to great networking is preparation. Before you go, do a little research about the event and the people who might be attending. Have a few conversation starters ready -simple questions like, “What brought you to this event?” or “Tell me about your business” are great ice breakers.

You don’t need to be the life of the party. Just be yourself and focus on making meaningful connections. And, above all, remember that everyone is there to network and meet business connections – you’re in friendly territory!!

And here’s a pro tip: if you want to position yourself as a true professional, make sure you’ve got your website and business cards sorted before you head out to any networking event. When someone asks about your services, you want to be able to hand them your business card that directs them to somewhere that shows off your expertise. Your website is like your digital handshake - it’s the first place people will go to learn more about you. If it’s polished and up-to-date, it reinforces everything you’ve talked about in person.

It's also really important to remember that the magic of networking doesn’t stop when the event ends. Follow up with the people you meet. Send a quick email or connect on LinkedIn. Mention something specific from your conversation and include a link to your website. It’s a simple gesture that keeps you top of mind and shows that you’re serious about building relationships.

I know putting yourself out there can feel uncomfortable at first, but growth doesn’t happen if you only stay inside your comfort zone.

Local networking isn’t just about getting new clients - it’s about being part of a community, building trust, and showing the world what you’re capable of. So, take a deep breath, put on your best smile, and show up.

Your business - and your future clients - will thank you for it.
